This
site was started at the time of the Kosovo War, but the arguments
(and evidence) about the War Party apply to both Democrats and
Republicans.
Many Americans
benefit from (small) wars or think that they will. Others
promote intellectuals' fantasies. Neoconservative founder Irving
Kristol said
in 8/2/96 "what we really need is...a threatening
enemy, one worthy of our mettle." Russia is now losing much of
its democracy and returning to a confrontational policy, in part
because of U.S. policies
undermined pro-Western forces. It was
our War Party which pushed NATO to its borders, put F-16 fighter-bombers
flying minutes from
St. Petersburg, calls to bring Ukraine into NATO and attacked
Serbia, Russia's historic ally. (and now, 7/08, put a thousand
marines to train with Georgian troops on Russia's doorstep). China only
started increasing its nuclear missiles
after
the U.S. attacked Iraq in 1990, and more so since our second attack on Iraq.
Now we have made nearly a quarter of the world, Muslims, into our
enemies and the War Party still calls for threatening confrontations with China.
Arnaud de Borchgrave has written of
15,000 earmarks in the defense budget, a whole new way of
funding and building constituencies for more wars.
And
Private
contractors are now another whole new lobby for unending wars.

In 1919, Joseph Schumpteter described ancient Rom
"There was no corner of the known world
where some interest was not alleged to be in danger or under actual attack. If the
interests were not Roman, they were those of Rome's allies; and if Rome had no allies, the
allies would be invented. When it was utterly impossible to contrive such an interest --
why, then it was the national honor that had been insulted. The fight was always invested
with an aura of legality. Rome was always being attacked by evil-minded neighbors.
The whole world was pervaded by a host of enemies, it was manifestly Rome's duty to guard
against their indubitably aggressive designs" by Joseph Shumpeteter, 1919
